The Shergar Cup divides opinion like nothing else in the British summer: jockeys in team colours, points on a leaderboard, and six competitive handicaps at one of the world's great racecourses. Whatever you make of the format, here is what matters to us: seventy horses, all handicappers, ridden by international jockeys who have never sat on them before. Every crutch the ordinary punter leans on, jockey bookings, stable whispers, the aura of a big-name rider, is gone. What remains is the horses and their data, and that is our home ground.
This guide walks through all six races using the EquiAnalytix model: TPR percentages built from a database of more than 836,000 runs, race figures derived from the clock rather than opinion, pace maps, draw studies and trainer form. Everything is explained as we go, so if this is your first time reading our work, start with the primer below. TPR (Total Performance Rating) is EquiAnalytix's proprietary rating, built from a database of more than 836,000 runs. Every horse's number is derived from race times adjusted for class, going, course and conditions, rather than from opinion or official handicap marks. In short: the clock, made comparable across every race in Britain and Ireland.
For every race, our model weighs each runner's complete evidence and expresses it as a percentage, and the percentages in a race always add up to 100. A horse on 25% carries a quarter of the race's total signal. The quickest way to read one: divide 100 by the number of runners to get the 'average' figure (about 8% in a twelve-runner race), and anything well above that marks a horse the data genuinely likes. Across all racing, roughly 73% of winners come from our top four ranked horses.
Each individual run a horse records gets a figure from us, built from the race time and adjusted for the class of race. As a rough scale: the average run in our database rates about 80, anything above 100 is smart handicap form, 140-plus is approaching stakes class, and figures over 180 are elite. When we write that a horse 'ran a 144 in defeat', we mean the clock says that performance was better than most winning ones.
The same idea, filtered to today's conditions. A horse's going figure is its established level on today's ground, the distance figure its level at today's trip, and the track figure its level at today's course. They matter because plenty of horses are a stone better on fast ground, or at Ascot, than their general form suggests, and the filters catch exactly that.
These are the engine's two deepest dials. Ability is the level a horse has proven it owns across its whole career. Operating level is the level the model believes it is primed to run to today, based on its most recent work. When operating reads above ability, the horse is in a purple patch, running above its established self, and that is historically when handicappers do their winning. When operating sags below ability, something is cooling.
A pace map forecasts the early shape of a race by classifying every runner's habitual running style from its past races: front-runner, prominent, mid-division or held up. Races with many front-runners tend to be run too fast early and set up for the patient horses; races with no early speed favour those ridden close to the pace. We score each race's likely pace from 1 (crawl) to 10 (breakneck).
On straight courses the stall a horse starts from can matter enormously. We analyse tens of thousands of past runs at each track to measure how often horses from low, middle and high stalls actually win compared with how often they should, given their odds. When we say forward-going horses from high draws at Ascot 'win about a quarter more often than expected', that is a measured historical edge, not folklore.
We rate the recent performances of every stable's runners and compare the last month against the yard's own twelve-month baseline. A trainer reading '104 against 97' has runners performing above their normal level right now, a hot yard; one reading well below baseline is cold, and even a well-handicapped horse from a cold yard wins less often than the bare form suggests.
In a handicap, every horse is assigned an official rating (OR) by the BHA handicapper, and higher-rated horses carry more weight to level the playing field. When we say a horse is '8lb higher than for its last win', it must now perform 8lb better than the day it last won just to have the same chance. Comparing our figures with the official mark is how we spot horses the handicapper has underestimated.
All six races are handicaps ridden by invited international jockeys on unfamiliar horses, so the usual crutches of jockey form and stable patterns are missing. Race times, pace and draw data do not care who is in the saddle, which makes an objective, data-led read more valuable than on a normal Saturday.

Twelve sprinters over Ascot's stiff five furlongs, and nearly half of them are confirmed early speedballs. That makes the opener a race about race-shape as much as raw ability: when this many horses commit to the front end on fast ground, the finish usually belongs to whoever times a move as the leaders tire. Our data makes it one of the most open races on the card.

Eleven stayers over two miles, the longest test of the afternoon and the race where stamina data earns its keep. Marathon handicaps reward horses whose figures hold up over extreme trips, and they expose the ones whose form is built on shorter races. For once, the model is not sitting on the fence.
A dozen middle-distance handicappers over Ascot's mile and a half, and a race that quietly contains some of the best recent form figures on the whole card. Two of the principals met at Newmarket four weeks ago, which gives us a direct line of form to work with, and there is a lightly raced improver in the field whose numbers say he has not stopped getting better yet.
The tightest race on the card by our numbers: five sprinters separated by three percentage points at the top of the model, and the most ferocious pace forecast of the day. When the model refuses to split a race, the supporting layers, form lines, engine profiles and trainer form, have to break the tie, and here they do.
The Classic drops to Class 3, but it might be the most instructive race on the card for anyone learning to read data against a market. It contains a horse on a three-timer whom the crowd will love, a quiet Irish raider with the biggest figure in the race, and a favourite-profile horse whose last run was quietly poor. The clock has opinions about all three.
The finale is a proper Class 2 mile, and our model finishes the day with a puzzle: four horses tied at the top of its percentages. When the headline number cannot separate a race, the layers underneath, raw figures, engine profiles and the stories hidden in race comments, become the whole game. One of these four has figures from another planet; another has the best excuse on the card.
